Turkey expels diplomats as Syria denounces Western diplomatic protest

30 May

AP reports that beginning Tuesday, countries came together in protest of the violence in Syria by expelling Syrian diplomats from their countries.  This includes United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Japan, and Bulgaria.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement Wednesday, “It is out of the question to remain silent and without any reaction in the face of this action, which amounts to a crime against humanity,” and “This grave crime against humanity by those who have attempted a massacre of civilians cannot go unpunished.”

Death counts for the massacre are being reported at up to 116 people murdered during the slaughter in Houla on May 25.  The Syrian government continues to deny responsibility, while the survivors say Assad’s troops were responsible “for at least some” of the carnage.

13 people, rumored to be defected Syrian soldiers, were killed Wednesday.  The victims had been shot and were found face down with their hands tied behind their backs 31 miles east of the city of Deir al-Zor .  Those responsible for this atrocity have taken the tragic fighting to a new, barbaric level.  The U.N. Human Rights Council has plans to meet on Friday to confront Syria for the third time since the rebellion began in March 2011.

China and Russia still refuse to impose U.N. penalties to force Assad to stop the brutality towards protesters and armed insurgents.

Turkey, United States, Britain, France and Germany have joined forces and ordered Syrian diplomats out of their countries in protest of the Houla massacre.  Reuters reports,

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani accused U.S. and other Western officials of seeking to “prepare the ground for a new crisis” over Syria, Iran’s Press TV website reported.

“The Majlis (parliament) condemns the opportunistic intervention of certain countries in Syria and the U.S. terrorist measures and unwise warmongering messages,” he said.

From The New York Times

“Syria’s state-run news agency, SANA, said United Nations monitors visited the central city of Hama on Sunday, where they met with the governor, while opposition activists said observers visited Rastan, a rebel-held town south of Hama. An amateur video posted online showed two white United Nations vehicles driving in Rastan accompanied by a red pickup truck with the words “Free Army” written on it.”

The next photo is from earlier this month.  It shows a U.N. observer walking with a man wearing a shirt with an Al Qaeda flag emblem, according to the caption.  I cannot make out the symbol.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the unrest in Syria has killed more than 11,000 people since an anti-regime uprising broke out in March last year.”
